3060 Ti Problems - EVGA Forums (3)

Hello,

I am having a couple of problems with a new 3060Ti. Here is my setup.

Graphics: 3060Ti
Processor: AMD Ryzen 5800X 8-core
Motherboard: ASUS AMD AM4 ROG Strix X570-E Gaming ATX
RAM: 64GB
Power Supply: CORSAIR HX Series HX850 Platinum.

Computer, sans video card was built a year ago. Card only arrived recently.

1. No bios access. The motherboard requires CSM turned on in order to boot and I wonder if the 3060 may require it to be off. I've reverted to the old card which works fine, a GTX 970.
2. Intermittent fan vibration. May go all day without happening, then the next day occur frequently. The fans turn freely to the touch and there are no visibly bent fins.

The fan problem is very common. Huge batch of bad fans, might be covid related lack of qc. Go into bios and reset everything to factory. Try to ddu(display driver uninstaller) with 970. Then take it out and put in 3060ti. Install drivers then update the firmware using precision x program from evga.

Fan noise aside, it may be a little more complicated than that. If CSM is required to boot, that means the OS drive was partitioned in MBR. To disable CSM, the OS drive needs to be converted to GPT. The easiest way to do that without having to reinstall Windows is to use a third-party application like EaseUS Partition Master. Also, modern GPUs don’t seem to like CSM being enabled especially when it comes to updating the vBIOS.

As for converting MBR to GPT, there's this mbr2gpt tool within Windows. It doesn't always work, and be prepared that if it is successful, you'll have to go into your BIOS and switch from "Legacy" to EUFI boot mode and turn of CSM in order to boot into Windows.

Pretty sure none of those methods work if your boot partition is MBR instead of GPT. Pretty much nobody should be installing Windows 10 with using MBR and CSM enabled.

The ROG motherboard does not work natively with the Ryzen processor. I'd like to avoid reverting the factory then having to flash it again to get the Ryzen working.

Using the 970 I uninstalled the video drivers and cleared the registry errors using CCleaner. Installed the 3060Ti. Installed GEForce and Precision X1. Bios is now available.

Precision X1 gave the following messages.
Operating System: Please re-install Windows in UEFI Mode
Graphics VBIOS: CSM Support has to be disabled before flashing the VBIOS
Motherboard: Please check with your motherboard vendor

    Current BIOS Boot settings:
    Launch CSM = Enabled
Boot Device Control = UEFI and Legacy OPROM
Boot from Network Devices = Legacy Only
Boot From Storage Devices = Legacy Only
Boot From PCI-E/PCI Expansion Drives = Legacy Only.

    * CSM must be turned on in order to get the system to boot.
    * I don't understand the instruction to reinstall windows in UEFI mode. If I remember the system setup correctly, Boot Device Control = UEFI and Legacy OPROM was required to get a successful boot.
    * For the motherboard updates, I'd like to be certain what needs updating before doing this.

    Questions:
How important is a UEFI windows install?
Is there a way to update VBIOS with CSM turned on?

Regarding the fans, I'll have to keep the 3060Ti running for few days to see what happens.

It's rather important to have your Windows 10 installed in UEFI (security reasons, better compatibility as nearly all motherboards are UEFI/BIOS now, applications requiring the more modern mode etc)
The graphics card vBIOS will not update unless CSM is turned off. Disabling Fast Boot is also HIGHLY RECOMMENDED. All of those things if set correctly will make it so that they are modern, work better together and can be updated correctly.

You can try to convert your Windows boot from MBR to GPT (EUFI) without reinstalling windows via this comment I gave above:

Follow up fan grinding. I RMA'd the first card and received another 3060ti. The new card's fans grind as well, just not as often.
